The Erigo is a robotic tilt table used in early neuro-rehabilitation to safely mobilise patients who are not yet able to stand or walk, such as those recovering from severe stroke, brain injury or long periods of bed rest.

How It Works

The Erigo combines a gradually tilting table with robotic leg movement (cyclic stepping) and, in some models, functional electrical stimulation of the leg muscles. As the patient is brought towards an upright position, the legs are moved in a walking-like pattern, and muscle stimulation encourages active participation.

Why It Helps

Bringing a patient upright early has many benefits, but sudden verticalisation can cause a drop in blood pressure. By combining tilting with continuous leg movement, the Erigo helps maintain stable circulation, so patients tolerate being upright sooner and for longer. Early mobilisation reduces the complications of prolonged bed rest, maintains muscle and bone, stimulates circulation and cardiovascular fitness, and provides early sensory and motor input that supports recovery.

Role in Rehabilitation

Used early in a rehabilitation programme, the Erigo bridges the gap between bed rest and active therapy, preparing patients — physically and psychologically — for standing, gait training and more demanding rehabilitation.
