Hypoxic Brain Injury: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

A hypoxic brain injury occurs when the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen. Because brain cells are highly sensitive to oxygen loss, even a few minutes can cause serious damage. A complete loss of oxygen is called anoxic injury.

Causes

Common causes include cardiac arrest, near-drowning, choking or suffocation, severe asthma attacks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and complications during surgery or anaesthesia — anything that interrupts the oxygen supply to the brain.

Symptoms

Effects depend on how long the brain was deprived of oxygen and which areas were affected. They can range from confusion, memory and concentration problems, and difficulty with coordination or speech, to seizures, movement disorders and, in severe cases, prolonged reduced consciousness.

Treatment and Rehabilitation

Immediate treatment restores oxygen and stabilises the patient. Beyond the emergency phase, recovery relies on structured neuro-rehabilitation: physiotherapy for movement and balance, occupational therapy for daily skills, speech and language therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation for memory and attention. Emotional support for the patient and family is an important part of care. Early, intensive rehabilitation offers the best chance of regaining function.
