Brain Vascular Tangle, medically termed arteriovenous malformation (AVM), refers to abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the brain that create a vascular tangle.
How is Brain AVM Diagnosed?
Doctors begin by reviewing patient complaints and conducting thorough physical examinations. Several imaging techniques help confirm the diagnosis:
Cerebral Angiography provides the most detailed assessment, identifying vessel location and characteristics within the brain.
Computed Tomography (CT) uses beam technology to generate cross-sectional brain images. Injected dye enhances visualization of blood vessels for improved clarity.
MRI Imaging employs magnets and radio waves to create detailed brain pictures. This method surpasses CT in sensitivity and can detect subtle AVM-related changes. It reveals the precise AVM location and potential bleeding. Optional dye injection tracks blood circulation patterns.
Brain Vascular Tangle - AVM Treatment
Multiple treatment approaches exist for AVM. Selection depends on patient age, overall health status, and the AVM's dimensions and location.
All treatments share one primary objective: preventing brain hemorrhage. Treatment may also address seizure control or other neurological complications. Medications can manage symptoms like headaches.
Asymptomatic AVMs or those in difficult-to-treat brain regions may only require regular monitoring without intervention.
Surgical operation represents the most frequent treatment choice, offering three distinct methods:
Surgical Resection (Removal by Surgery)
When AVMs have bled and occupy accessible brain areas, surgical removal becomes viable. The surgeon temporarily removes skull portions to access the vascular tangle, then reattaches the bone afterward.
This approach suits AVMs with low hemorrhage risk or minimal seizure likelihood. Deeper brain AVMs carry elevated risks, potentially necessitating alternative treatments.
Endovascular Embolization
This minimally invasive procedure involves fewer incisions than conventional surgery. A catheter enters through leg or wrist blood vessels, advancing toward the brain via x-ray guidance. Once positioned within vessels supplying the tangle, vasoconstrictors inject to block blood flow through that vessel.
Stereotactic Radiosurgery
Precisely focused radiation destroys the vascular tangle without incisions. Rather than traditional surgery, this approach targets abnormal vessels and delivers radiation to damage them and block blood flow.
This method suits small, surgically inaccessible AVMs that don't cause life-threatening hemorrhage.
