What to Do If You Fall After Knee Replacement
Immediate steps to take if you fall after knee replacement, warning signs to watch for, and how to prevent future falls.
Prof. Dr. Engin Çakar · Physical Medicine & RehabilitationA fall during knee-replacement recovery can be alarming. Knowing what to do protects your new joint and your safety.
Immediate Actions
Stay calm and assess the situation. If you cannot get up or have intense pain, do not move — call for emergency help. Check for injuries, avoid putting weight on the operated leg, and use support or ask someone for assistance. Report the fall to your healthcare provider even if you feel fine.
Signs of Potential Complications
Seek prompt medical attention for new or increased pain in the knee, significant swelling or bruising, difficulty moving the joint, or a feeling of instability or the knee "giving way" — these can indicate damage to the implant or surrounding tissue.
Preventing Future Falls
Remove trip hazards such as loose rugs and cords, improve lighting, and add handrails where helpful. Use recommended walking aids, wear supportive non-slip shoes, and keep up your prescribed exercises to build strength and balance. Increase activity gradually and avoid rushing.
With calm, prompt action and sensible precautions, most falls can be managed without lasting harm to your recovery.
