Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in women, and some warning signs can differ from the classic picture. Recognising them early saves brain and saves lives.

The Core Signs — FAST

The main signs are the same for everyone: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services. Also watch for sudden numbness on one side, confusion, trouble seeing, dizziness or loss of balance, and a sudden severe headache.

Signs More Often Reported by Women

Women may also experience less typical symptoms such as sudden fatigue or weakness, nausea, fainting, shortness of breath, confusion or disorientation, and general or facial pain. Because these can be mistaken for other conditions, women sometimes reach hospital later — so any sudden, unexplained change should be taken seriously.

Why Women Are at Risk

Some risk factors are specific to women, including pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, certain hormonal contraceptives and hormone therapy, and a higher lifetime risk with age. Managing blood pressure, not smoking, staying active and treating atrial fibrillation all reduce risk.

If you suspect a stroke in yourself or someone else, do not wait — call for emergency help immediately. Rapid treatment dramatically improves the chances of recovery.
