Deciding when to have a hip replacement is a personal decision, usually made when hip problems significantly affect quality of life. Certain signs suggest it may be time to discuss surgery with a specialist.

Persistent Pain

Hip pain that continues despite rest, medication, physiotherapy and other non-surgical treatments — especially pain that persists at night or at rest, not just during activity — is a key sign.

Reduced Mobility and Stiffness

Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or getting in and out of chairs and cars; a limp; or stiffness that limits how far you can move the hip all point to advancing joint damage.

Impact on Daily Life

When hip pain stops you doing everyday tasks — dressing, washing, working, sleeping or enjoying activities you value — the joint problem has begun to control your life.

Non-Surgical Treatments No Longer Help

If medication, injections, physiotherapy, weight management and walking aids no longer provide adequate relief, surgery may offer the lasting solution.

Imaging Findings

X-rays or scans showing advanced joint damage or "bone-on-bone" arthritis, alongside these symptoms, support the decision.

If several of these apply to you, it is worth requesting an assessment. A specialist can confirm whether hip replacement is appropriate and discuss the timing and expected benefits.
