Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, but it is also largely preventable — and recognising the warning signs early saves lives.

Recognise the Warning Signs — FAST

Remember FAST: Face drooping on one side, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call emergency services immediately. Other sudden signs include numbness or weakness on one side, confusion, trouble seeing, dizziness or loss of balance, and a sudden severe headache.

Don't Ignore a Mini-Stroke

A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) causes stroke-like symptoms that pass within minutes or hours. It is a serious warning that a larger stroke may follow, and needs urgent medical assessment.

Reducing Your Risk

The most powerful step is controlling high blood pressure. Also manage diabetes and cholesterol, stop smoking, stay active, eat a healthy low-salt diet, maintain a healthy weight, limit alcohol, and treat atrial fibrillation if present.

Regular Check-ups

Regular reviews of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and heart rhythm help catch and manage risk factors before they cause harm.

By knowing the warning signs and managing your risk factors, you can both prevent strokes and ensure fast treatment if one occurs — and fast treatment dramatically improves the chances of recovery.
