Minimizing Pain While Awaiting Hip Replacement
Practical strategies to stay comfortable and mobile while waiting for hip replacement surgery.
Prof. Dr. Engin Çakar · Physical Medicine & RehabilitationWaiting for hip replacement surgery can be difficult when pain limits daily life. While surgery is the definitive solution, several strategies can reduce discomfort and keep you as mobile as possible in the meantime.
Movement and Exercise
Gentle, low-impact activity — walking, swimming, water exercise and stationary cycling — helps maintain strength, flexibility and joint mobility without overloading the hip. A physiotherapist can prescribe safe exercises and stretches suited to your condition.
Pain Relief
Over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication, used as advised by your doctor, can control pain and inflammation. Applying heat can ease stiffness, while cold packs help with flare-ups and swelling.
Weight and Daily Habits
Keeping to a healthy weight reduces load on the hip. Pacing activities, avoiding prolonged standing, and using supportive footwear all help. A walking stick or aid can offload the joint and improve stability.
Aids and Home Adjustments
Simple changes — a higher chair, a raised toilet seat, grab rails, and avoiding low, soft seating — reduce strain and make movement easier and safer.
Support and Review
Stay in touch with your care team; if pain worsens significantly, your priority on the waiting list may be reviewed. Managing pain well before surgery also helps you enter the operation stronger, which supports a smoother recovery afterwards.
