Lifetime Precautions After Hip Replacement
How to protect a hip replacement for the long term — exercise, weight, joint protection and everyday precautions.
Prof. Dr. Engin Çakar · Physical Medicine & RehabilitationTotal hip replacement can dramatically reduce pain and restore movement, but a few lifelong habits help protect the new joint and keep it working well for years.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Follow your prescribed physical-therapy programme closely: range-of-motion work, muscle strengthening and gait training rebuild strength and function. Respect your surgeon's weight-bearing instructions and use crutches or a walker while advised.
Regular, Low-Impact Exercise
Stay active with joint-friendly exercise. Walking builds cardiovascular fitness and leg strength; swimming and water aerobics give a full-body workout without loading the hip. Avoid high-impact activities such as running, jumping and contact sports.
Weight Management
Keeping to a healthy weight reduces stress on the joint and lowers the risk of premature wear. Favour a balanced diet, mindful portions and good hydration, and seek dietitian support if helpful.
Joint Protection
Maintain good posture, avoid deep bending, twisting or heavy lifting, and use aids such as a cane when needed on long walks or prolonged standing.
Dental Precautions
Tell your dentist about your hip replacement before any procedure; prophylactic antibiotics may be advised to prevent infection reaching the joint through the bloodstream.
With sensible precautions, most people enjoy an active, comfortable life on their new hip for many years.
