How Long Does a Knee Replacement Take?

One of the most common questions before knee replacement is simply how long it takes. The operation itself is relatively short; the recovery is the longer part of the journey.

The Surgery

A knee replacement usually takes between one and two hours. A partial (unicompartmental) replacement is often quicker than a total knee replacement. The exact time depends on the complexity of the case, the surgical technique and whether both knees are done together.

In Hospital

Around the operation, time is spent on anaesthesia, preparation and recovery. Most patients stay in hospital for one to three days, though some centres offer shorter or day-case stays for suitable patients. Gentle movement and physiotherapy begin within a day.

Recovery Timeline

The bigger picture is recovery. Walking aids are used at first and reduced over the following weeks. Most people resume light daily activities within four to six weeks, with continued improvement in strength and range of motion over three to six months. Swelling and occasional discomfort can take up to a year to fully settle.

So while the procedure takes only a couple of hours, planning for the weeks of rehabilitation that follow is the key to a successful outcome.
